ILDA executive director Patrick Murphy (right) participated in the SAE G-10T Laser Safety Hazards Subcommittee meeting, held at NASA's Kennedy Space Center Oct. 16-17. The group of laser users, safety experts, and aviation officials is working on guidance for laser use in airspace. It includes concepts such as how close a laser can come to an aircraft before it must be turned off, so this is of direct interest to laserists doing outdoor shows. Additional work on this document will be done at the Feb. 2-5 2009 G-10T meeting. (Photo courtesy Van Nakagawara, FAA, SAE G-10T chair)
ILDA has created a new website
with laser pointer safety information. The site,
LaserPointerSafety.com, is part of ILDA's efforts to stop people
from aiming pointers at aircraft. Although ILDA does not represent
pointers per se, bad press for "recreational" lasers is not good for the
image of laser shows.
Updated the Internet & eBay fraud warning page, to include cases where sellers claim FDA certification or approval, but they do not appear to have such approval. One seller has a projector with an FDA logo on it (photo at right), although the FDA does not approve laser equipment in this way. Also, some sellers claim to have accession numbers but they do not match the FDA's numbering system.

Added minutes of the SAE G10-T Laser Hazards Safety Subcommittee meeting, held in August 2008. The document, which is for ILDA Members use only, describes about 12 incidents where lasers were used to illuminate aircraft. Although these involved laser pointers, it still is useful for ILDA Members to read about this. No one should point a laser at or near an aircraft, and increasingly there are arrests, trials and even jail terms if this happens.
ILDA attended the South East Laser Enthusasts Meeting, in Newton NC on August 16. This is a group of laser enthusiasts who normally meet online. We gave two presentations; one on the Moscow incident and one on ILDA in general.

On July 17, the ILDA Board of Directors voted on two measures to help reassure the public about safe laser shows. First, ILDA Members will be required to review some basic information and reaffirm their commitment to safety. This effort is being funded by special donations from Members.
Moved ILDA's Safety links and articles webpage from the Members-Only area to a public area. This was done to help disseminate basic laser safety information not only to our Members but also to non-member laserists and the general public.
On July 14, press reports
