GENERAL RELEASE
TO THE LASERIST COMMUNITY
FROM: ILDA Ethics Committee
ATTN: ILDA Members and Laserists
DATE: October 20, 2010
We would like to draw your
attention to recently developed software, which is of concern to
the laser light show industry in the area of potential piracy.
The software in
question basically "intercepts" screen calls made through OpenGL,
which is typically used in the preview window of lasershow
production software, and converts these to an ILDA output format
so that the user can view current output being projected by
scanners.
After
review, the ILDA Board and Ethics Committee could not determine a
legitimate use of this software utility, and it appears that it is
used only for piracy; that is, to capture laser image data which
otherwise is encrypted.
ILDA has a number
of Member companies and individuals whose business income stems
from the creation and sales of laser shows, frames and content.
Normally this laser artwork is sold with some element of
protection for both the producer and end user.
However, it would
now be possible to illegally intercept and copy show content. This
may include content which is available online for preview to
potential show purchasers.
Also, many software
platforms include quantities of laser show content free for use to
the owner of said laser software -- which, now could possibly be
exported illegally.
Listed below are
current lasershow content producers and companies which have
expressed concern over this issue and support our position.
ILDA wishes to
support our Membership and legal, responsible use of software. We
do not condone or support any acts of piracy.
If an ILDA
Member were using software to illegally intercept otherwise
restricted/encrypted laser image data, the Member could have
Ethics Committee action brought against them. ILDA's strongest
penalty would be public expulsion from the Association.
Please digest this
information as you see fit.
