It was mentioned in another thread here that the 671xx drivers allow a faster ILDA speed than the 673xx dual-axis boards do with 6215 scanners (60 kpps vs. 30 kpps). I'm curious why?

I can see that with +-28 V supplies in bridging mode and the scanners at the maximum RMS current, the heat dissipation on the 673xx board is pretty extreme...is that the reason?

The 671XX has a optional High Power daughter board. This, coupled with the 6215 scanner version with the high power connector and associated high power cables, allows you to put more current into the scanner. More current allows you to run the scanner faster, but of course also creates significantly more heat for both the amps and the scanners when running them at full performance.
