2009 ILDA Awards

(Note that there were no
2008 ILDA Awards. The previous awards were the
2007 Awards (entry deadline Dec. 2007, judged in spring 2008 and
presented at the Sept. 2008 ILDA Conference on the Carnival
Imagination). The 2009 Awards had an entry deadline in Jan. 2009,
they were judged in May 2009 and were presented June 7 2009 in

ILDA's awards for excellence--the laser display industry's equivalent of Hollywood's Oscars--each year honor companies and individuals from around the world for their achievements:

The
Artistic Award
categories cover virtually all aspects of modern laser displays, from the
production of huge outdoor shows to the creation of individual laser graphics.
- The
Fenning Award
honors technological achievement that advances the industry.
- The Career Achievement Award is ILDA's highest honor, given for work spanning many years in the area of show quality, innovation, and industry service.
For 2009, ILDA received 112 artistic entries from 19 different Member companies. These entries were judged May 24 2009 at the judging host company, Lighting Systems Design Inc. (Greg Makhov) in Orlando Florida. Judging coordinator was ILDA Executive Director Patrick Murphy.

Fenning Awards for Technical Achievement

1st: "LaserMatrix", Showtacle
LaserMatrix is a device for controlling more laser projectors. It makes laser show creation for more lasers easier. Programming LaserMatrix is similar to programming moving heads. It also allows integrating more ILDA laser sources and switching among them.
2nd: "IRIS ColorSafe", Eye-Magic
IRIS ColorSafe addresses two important issues in laser display. The first is the unstable and highly non-linear output of modern solid-state lasers. The second is audience scanning safety. The system adjusts the laser power inside the safety zone depending on beam velocity, point-by-point in real time.
3rd (tie): "3D Laser Projector 'Magnetic Beam'", Lightwave International and Arctos Lasertechnik
The magnetic beam projector uses a revolutionary new technique to create seemingly impossible non-linear volumetric 3D abstracts in mid-air. The designs not only vary in two axes as with traditional projectors, but the projector also has control over the placement of "light solids" along the Z-axis as well.
3rd (tie): "New Universal Control System with Safety and Linearization", HB-Laser
We developed this BUS board with five card slots, to provide a unique laser safety and linearization board for single-color systems and also for RGB systems. It has individual plug-in boards for each color channel.
Hon. Mention: "LASORB", Pangolin
LASORB is a device that protects laser diodes from ESD and power surges. LASORB can also improve the dynamic behavior of laser diode drivers. In essence, LASORB extends the lifetime of laser diodes by protecting them from optical and electrical overstress conditions.
