ILDA Members affirm commitment to safe shows, Code of Ethics

As a result of the July 5 incident at the Aquamarine festival laser show near Moscow, ILDA Members are being asked to affirm their knowledge and commitment to basic laser show safety principles and to ILDA's Code of Ethics. This was enacted by the ILDA Board of Directors at their July 17 2008 teleconference.

It must be signed by all ILDA Members who operate and/or produce laser shows and displays:

  • For Corporate and Nonprofit Members doing laser shows, the person signing is a corporate owner or officer with primary laser safety responsibility, who is signing on behalf of the corporation or organization.
  • For Individual and Student Members doing laser shows, the person signing is the Member.

Members not signing may be suspended or expelled

If a Member doing laser shows does not sign this Statement of Affirmation, then their Membership may be revoked under ILDA's Bylaws. Article IV, Section 3 gives the Board the power to suspend or expel a Member "for cause such as conduct detrimental to ILDA or to the laser display industry."

The safety rules are basic ones which any competent laser show company should follow. The Code of Ethics is required of every ILDA Member. If a company does not agree to these basic principles, then in the Board's view their conduct is "detrimental to ILDA or to the laser show industry.

Statement of Affirmation to Safe Laser Shows
and the ILDA Code of Ethics

All ILDA Members operating and/or producing laser shows must electronically sign this statement by filling it out and clicking the "Submit" button.

 LASER SHOW SAFETY
I have read, and I understand and acknowledge, the Laser Safety Basics document detailed on this webpage and summarized below:

As a laser operator and/or producer of laser light shows, I understand and acknowledge the following:
   1. Above any other considerations, a laser show must be safe. This means it must not cause injury (harmful changes) to eyes or skin.
   2. I understand that I am ultimately responsible for the laser show’s safely.
   3. I will not present a show which is hazardous (potentially unsafe), or change or modify a safe show so that it becomes hazardous.
   4. I will not allow others such as show producers or clients to override safety considerations.
   5. My shows will be continuously monitored by so that hazardous conditions can be detected if they occur. In such a case, the condition will be corrected or the laser emission will be immediately terminated (within a few seconds).
   6. I will ensure that all projectors, mirrors and other devices that align or aim the beam are secured properly, so that they will not misalign, or present an overhead fall hazard.
   7. I will use backup methods to ensure that if beams do not hit a target, they will not pose a hazard.

   8.
I understand that audience scanning etc. requires the highest level of laser safety knowledge, and requires the most care in design, setup and operation.
   9.
I understand that pulsed lasers such as Q-switched Nd:YAG and Copper Vapor lasers (including Copper Bromide) should never be used for audience scanning.
  10.
If I do not understand the above-referenced standards (e.g., ANSI and/or IEC), or if I do not have the equipment and procedures to ensure the safety of the audience, I will not do audience scanning.

I specifically understand and acknowledge that pulsed lasers such as Q-switched Nd:YAG and and Copper Vapor lasers (including Copper Bromide) should, in general, never be used for audience scanning.

 ILDA CODE OF ETHICS
